New Zealand’s Black Sticks Men scored a historical victory over the reigning world champions, the Australian Kookaburras, as they defeated them by 3-0 in the opening match of the Oceania Cup, Olympic Qualifier, played in Hobart, Tasmania, on Thursday, October
The victory came after a long and a hard struggle of almost twelve years as the Black Sticks Men defeated their Australian counterparts in a test match way back in 1999. That match was also an Oceania Cup game played in Brisbane where the Black Sticks Men
won by 3-2.
The match was played in a tough mode where the Black Stick Men showed some real class to beat the world champions, Kookaburras, who have never been an easy opposition.
The Black Sticks Men dominated their Australian rivals most of the time during the entire seventy minutes play, especially in the second part of the game where they scored a double strike.
New Zealand’s Black Sticks Men scored one goal in the first half whereas their opponents remained void of scoring any goal in the entire match.
Hugo Inglis opened the account for the Black Stick Men in the first half by scoring an astonishing gaol to stun the Kookaburras. The Kookaburras tried very hard to level the score before the interval but they failed.
The second half belonged to the Kiwis as well as they made a double blow against the Australians.
Andy Hayward scored the second goal on a penalty corner midway through the second half.
He made it once again for the Kiwis just nine minutes before the close of the play. The match concluded at 3-0 in favour of New Zealand.
Shane McLeod, coach of the Black Sticks Men, looked very pleased with his team’s performance.
He stated that the victory was a result of excellent team work with the defence line doing a good job to keep the reigning World Champions scoreless during the entire match.
He also stated that the team played an outstanding game of hockey but more importantly, it played with great discipline that led it to a historic win against the world champions.
The next match will be played on Saturday, October 8.
