Barcelona vs. Real Madrid – Tactical Preview (Part 1)

Barcelona will be facing Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi final yet again as Champions League kicks off during the midweek. The Catalan Giants will be happy with a two goal advantage as the second leg takes place at the Nou Camp.

This is going to be the fifth El Clasico of the season and the fourth in almost twenty days. Both the teams are going to have a lot of pressure despite the fact that Barcelona have won the away leg with a two goal margin.

Just like the first leg, both the teams are going to experience a few selection problems. In the first leg Real Madrid missed out on Sami Khedira and their first choice centre back Ricardo Carvalho. On the other hand, Barcelona missed out on all their left backs – Maxwell, Adriano and Eric Abidal. Moreover, they were also missing out on their first choice midfielder Andres Iniesta who injured his calf muscle.

Luckily for Barcelona, Eric Abidal and Andres Iniesta have been declared fit for the game against Real Madrid. According to the Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola, Eric Abidal is fit to play but he cannot perform for full 90 minutes. However, Andres Iniesta will be playing against the Los Blancos as he missed the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi final.

On the other hand, Real Madrid are again left in crises in terms of selection. Ricardo Carvalho will return to the first team but the Portuguese centre back Pepe is ruled out after he received a red card in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi final. Sergio Ramos is also not going to be a part of the team after he was shown a yellow card and he is also suspended for this game.

With these two players out, Real Madrid are again going to be in a defensive crises – something very important while playing against Barcelona.

The Spanish Champions played Carles Puyol as a left back in their last fixture against Real Madrid. Carles Puyol’s centre back role was taken by the Argentinean captain Javier Mascherano who partnered himself up with Gerard Pique. Daniel Alves stuck to the right back position.

On the other hand, Jose Mourinho played Sergio Ramos in the centre back position along with Raul Albiol. The Brazilian full back Marcelo played in the left back position as Alvaro Arbeloa played in the right back role.

The real question which is to be asked is whether Real Madrid are going to approach the game the same way or are they going to be different with the ball this time round?

The Los Blancos played a defensive strategy against Barcelona during the second leg of the Spanish La Liga. Barcelona were allowed to keep hold of the ball throughout the game and the Catalans were happy with keeping the possession of the ball. The first goal of the game came through a penalty won by David Villa as Raul Albiol took him down inside the 18 yard box.

With that game ending as a 1-1 draw, Real Madrid then approached Barcelona in a very different way during the Copa del Rey final.
