Barcelona and their defence crises (Part 4)

With Sergio Busquets falling behind, it is the former Liverpool man Javier Mascherano who plays right behind the play makers. The holding midfielder is still learning the Spanish style of play and he often slides in and earns himself a yellow card. The Argentinean midfielder performed well against Arsenal but still has to show his true worth to Josep Guardiola who still considers Sergio Busquets as a first choice.

Another “flaw” in the Barcelona defensive line is their right back role. Even though Daniel Alves has signed a new contract which is going to keep him at the club till 2015, there is not a single player who can replace him in his position. The Brazilian full back Adriano is the one who replaces him in that position. However, he simply does not get the job done for the Catalans.

The reason why Adriano cannot work for Barcelona in the right back position is because he is a left footed player. It is true that Daniel Alves is one of the best right backs in the world and there is no one who can replace him in Barcelona but every team needs a replacement for all the players. Barcelona currently do not have a single replacement for Daniel Alves who is not only good at defence but simply phenomenal in moving up the flank to assist his team in the attack. With Adriano playing on the right, it’s hard for him to get the ball to his stronger left foot to perfectly cross it in for the strikers.

The only advantage that Adriano has the right flank is the confidence that he gets because he can cut in from his left foot. The Brazilian finds it easy to get the ball on his stronger left foot to cut in to and shoot it on goal. The advantage is that Barcelona have another left footed player on the right wing. However, the disadvantage is the fact that his overconfidence does not let him drive the ball in towards the strikers who are waiting inside the 18 yard box.

Barcelona are currently suffering with a lot of defence crises. With two major injuries striking them in the form of Carles Puyol and Eric Abidal, Josep Guardiola’s men are finding it hard to defend. It is hard for Barcelona to cover up for such extraordinary defenders and the two other available centre backs, Gabriel Milito and Sergio Busquets can simply not work out for the Catalan Giants.

With two El Clasico’s lined up in the month of April, Barcelona desperately need their first choice defenders. The two week international break has come down for Barcelona as a blessing in disguise. Within these two weeks, the players might recover from their respective injuries and make a return to help their team win the league.

Currently the Spanish Champions have qualified for the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League and they are going to be facing the season’s surprises Shakhtar Donestk in the European competition. In the Spanish La Liga the Catalans are five points above Real Madrid even though the second leg for the El Clasico is still to be played in the Santiago Bernabeu – home of Real Madrid. In the third competition, the Copa del Rey, Barcelona have to face Real Madrid in the final of the competition.

With so much on the line for the Spanish Champions, they really need to get their first team back together in order to win another treble. However, with so many injuries striking them in such a crucial moment might change the cause of all the three competitions for Barcelona.
