Bangladesh to qualify for World Cup quarter-final: Shakib Hassan

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hassan is confident that his team will qualify for the quarter-final in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2011 this month.

Bangladesh have recently promoted to 8th position, one step above former world champions West Indies in the ICC ODI team rankings. They have been promoted for their victories over New Zealand and Zimbabwe. The Bengali Tigers did not let the Kiwis to win a single game out of a five-match One Day International series. Similarly they were also about to clean sweep Zimbabwe in their home ODI series. However, Zimbabwe managed to win a match out of the four ODIs against Bangladesh.

The Bangladeshi all-rounder stated that they had been performing well for the last 15 months and they had the capability to upset in the first round of the mega event. If they qualify for the second round, they will have the opportunity to move further towards semi-finals and then the grand finale, he added. Shakib was optimistic while stating that they only need to be victorious on four occasions to acquire a place in the second round, which is not difficult. Bangladesh can upset in the matches against strong cricket teams, he observed.

Bangladesh are scheduled to play their inaugural game against Asian tigers India on 19 February, 2011.  They will definitely have the advantage of home ground and home crowd as they are scheduled to play all their games at home. Moreover, their moral is high after completing a clean sweep against the Kiwis at home grounds in last October. Similarly in December, Zimbabwe also provided a lot of practice for the home team to be well-prepared for the mega event starting on February18.

They appeared in the World Cup 1999 for the first time and defeated the strongest team of the tournament Pakistan. Again in 2007 World Cup, they defeated South Africa and India. They are now all set to astonish the world again by doing several upsets in the upcoming World Cup. Shakib has been helping his team to be strengthen at the big stage for the past a few years. He scored a Test century, registered the best figures by a Bangladeshi to help them record their first overseas Test win,

Bangladesh seasoned campaigner Mohammad Ashraful will be playing his third World Cup. The  was of the view that now things had been changed as compared to what were in 2007 World Cup regarding capabilities of their team.. He added that they were aiming for upsets the World Cup but now they had a strong believe that they would definitely qualify for the quarter-final. They are placed in Group B with the co-host India, England, the West Indies, South Africa, Ireland and the Netherlands.
