Argentina wins Four Nations Women Field Hockey Tournament

Argentina – the world champions on Monday edged past USA by one goal and clinched the title of the Four Nations Women Field Hockey Tournament, held in Argentinean city of Rosario. USA displayed an outstanding performance and gave tough time to Argentina; the squad considered number one in the world of women hockey.

Four teams including Argentina, USA, Germany and Australia took part in the tournament and each played three games. Argentina won two matches against Germany and USA while drew a game against Australia. On the other side, USA Women lost to Argentina in the first game while defeated Germany and Australia in the group matches.

Argentina has had edge over USA in the head of past track record. In the whole, Argentina won 19 games against USA out of total 22 while drew remaining three games and never lost a single. They scored some 64 goals against USA while conceded only 25.

In the Four Nations Tournaments of Rosario and Mendoza, Argentina cruised past USA three times including finals by 5-0, 4-1 and 3-2.

The Women of Argentina though lost to Australia in the finals of the previous Mendoza Four Nations Tournament but was confident about the victory against USA.

The two teams started the contest in a disciplined way, as both determined to win the finals of the tournament.

The USA Women with to and fro attacks established their dominance in the game. The ball mostly in the first ten minutes remained under the control of USA. The fast and furious game paid off USA, as they earned first penalty corner of the game in the 8th minute.

Legendary striker of USA, Claire Laubach through a well shaped drag-flick converted the corner into a successful score and put her squad ahead on the scoreboard. She was a booming drag flicker, who converted three penalty corners in the tournament.

After missing a short corner, the Women of Argentina succeeded to tie the results through a penalty conversion in the 19th minute of the game. Noel Barrionuevo slammed the equality by means of a shot being perfectly sailed into the post.

The pace of the game further augmented after the tie-up, as both squads wanted to make a go-ahead goal. However, the world champions succeeded to do so with five minutes left into the first half. Barrionuevo, the legendary girl of Argentina scored her second goal of the day and doubled the tally.

At the start of the second half, the duo sides performed skilfully and blocked numerous hits of either side. Jackie Kintzer and Lauren Crandall proved them as outstanding defenders and saved many shots from the inverse side.

Carla Rebecchi of Argentina notched a goal following a solo run and stretched the difference in the 63rd minute of the game. USA earned numerous chances in the last part but only cashed one in the 67th minute. Paige Selenski of USA converted a penalty corner and discounted for final 3 to 2.

Lee Bodimead, the head coach of USA while speaking to the media said that they contested the game at the highest level and gained confidence for 2012 competitions. He stated, “It was important for us to put on a good performance so that we can make a step forward against Argentina's perceived dominance. We played at the highest level and that gives us added confidence going forward, with 2012 in mind.”
