Angelo Mathews: A picture of the best all-rounder for Sri Lanka

A shining star with tremendous amount of talent and skill in Sri Lankan cricket, Angelo Mathews, a right-hand all-rounder batsman, proves to be a great talent with his batting and bowling. His batting temperament for contributing runs in the ending innings and then opening dismissals with his bowling is a wonderful feature in the Lions side.  Mathews made his debut for Sri Lanka Under-19 at the age of 16 against Pakistan in 2003. Since his debut, he was handed the captaincy for the 2005 tour of England.  

Angelo Davis Mathews or just Mathews was born on 2 June, 1987 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He had his formal education in St. Joseph’s College, Colombo 10. Mathews made his Test debut against Pakistan at Galle in 2009.

In his test debut, he contributed 42 runs from 57 balls in first innings and then 27 runs from 34 balls in second inning, in his country’s win. He has played 13 Tests by scoring 527 runs setting his average on 35.13. He has 99 runs as highest and 2 splendid fifties. In the bowling side, he has 6 wickets with best bowling of 2 for 39. He proves quite expensive with his bowling as he has average of 70.16.

Mathews started his One Day International career against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2008.  He has played 36 ODIs and has scored 723 runs setting his average on 34.42. He has 6 fifties in ODIs with 77 runs as highest runs. His managed strike rate 83.97 demonstrated his qualities to build up innings with his terrific shots. With his blowing in the ODIs, he has 36 wickets with best bowling of 6 for 20 runs. He is pretty decent with his ball in ODIs as he has managed his average on 31.59.

During 2005 season, he was handed captaincy for the 2005 tour of England. The main achievement made on there was unbeaten 123 in the third Test but unfortunately this contribution could not defeat England. In the end of 2005, during Triangular series including England and Bangladesh, Mathews produced a matured innings with his bat. His unbeaten 70 runs laboured a great win over England and then 97 runs not out in the following match but again with another defeat against Bangladesh.

In 2007-08, he made a scored 696 runs managing his average on 58 and was shuffled around in to Sri Lanka A’s team. On South Africa tour he was in good touch with his form. After performing well in that tour he won the praised of his coach, Chandika Hathurusingha, for playing like an Iconic role for Sri Lanka in future. He was announced in the national squad on the tour of Zimbabwe in 2008.

Overall Mathew has played 43 first-class matches. He made his debut against Colombo Cricket Club in 2006. In 43 matches he has 2827 runs setting his average on 50.48. He has 8 classic hundreds and 11 splendid fifties. He has 270 splendid highest runs in first-class cricket. In the bowling side, he has 36 wickets in this format of game with best bowling figure of 5 for 47 runs with an average of 43.00.

In List-A cricket, he has 1412 runs in 73 matches with 12 fifties. However he has 48 wickets with best bowling figure of 6 for 20 runs.

Mathews opened his account in Twenty20 International against Australia in 2009. He added one dismissal in his country’s win against Australia. He has played 21 T20 International matches. He has 293 runs as in total including 58 runs as highest. In the bowling side, he has 15 wickets.

A shinning rising talent in Sri Lanka team has a great importance to perform middle-order and bowling role. He is playing his first the ICC World Cup 2011 and is expecting a lot from him as he is deemed a best temperament cricketer in the list of best all-rounder in the cricket world. After performing well in the World Cup Warm-up matches and then in the first World Cup match against Canada. He is determined to perform very well against Pakistan in his second match played at Colombo on 26 February, 2011.
