Ali Reza, might replace Ijaz Butt as PCB’s chairman – Cricket News Update

Pakistan's leading banker, Ali Reza is reportedly the front runner for the coveted role of Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman as the incumbent Ijaz Butt might not get an extension in his tenure.

"Yes there is some substance to these rumours but nothing is decided as yet and the President has yet to take a decision on this issue. But Ali Reza's name is being considered for the top cricket post," a government official told.

The news spread as some of the television channels revealed on Tuesday that PCB might approach Reza as a replacement of Butt.

Butt’s tenure ends on October 8, 2011 and the reports earlier revealed that the chairman wanted an extension in his tenure as PCB’s chairman. He was appointed as chairman of the board in October 2008 by the country’s President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the chief patron of the board.

The final decision will be taken by the president Zardari, as he returns from his private tour to Hong Kong.

During Butt’s tenure PCB has been facing different issues at different occasions, including major incidents, which ruined the image of the Pakistan cricket all round the world. The most disgraceful incident was seen last year, when three of the Pakistani cricketers – Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were alleged to be involved in the spot-fixing during the fourth Test against England at Lord’s in August.

The trio was handed heavy bans from the ICC anti-corruption tribunal for bribing money from bookie Mazhar Majeed for throwing no-balls.  Butt has also been involved in controversies with some of the cricketers, and his most recent clash was seen with former skipper Shahid Afridi.

Looking at these issues in the reign of Butt, many of the former cricketers have demanded that the chairman should not extend his tenure after once it ends on next month.

"Everything will be clear by next week because by that time it will be known who will represent Pakistan at the International Cricket Council Executive Board meeting on October 8 and 9th," source told.

Reports have revealed that Butt is supposed to attend the ICC meeting while Chief Operation Officer of the board, Subhan Ahmed will appear in the meeting of Asian Cricket Council Finance, next month.
